A small group is meeting to develop a network for Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people, who want to play an active part in improving the experience of being LGBT in Northumberland. The group is supported by the Northumberland Community Development Network as part of its equality programme and is run by and for LGBT people. (more…)

The Government ran a consultation between March and June this year on the practical arrangements necessary to implement section 202 of the Equality Act 2010. Making this change will allow those religious organisations that wish to do so to host civil partnership registrations on their religious premises. This voluntary provision is a positive step forward for both LGB rights and religious freedom. (more…)

On 4 November the Minister for Women announced that the Government would be looking at what more could be done to ensure that women were fully able to use their talents to support both themselves and economic growth. To ensure Government get the best advice we will be setting up a Women’s Business Council.

Tribunals can demand employers conduct diversity training and equality audits to benefit the entire workforce according to a ruling in a recent age discrimination case.
The case of Lycée Français Charles De Gaulle v Delambre heard at the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT)(derived special powers to make recommendations under S.124 of the Equality Act 2010 not only to stop unlawful discrimination or harassment against a claimant but also in respect of the rest of the workforce.

Let’s challenge the ‘us and them’ attitude towards people who have disabilities that don’t conform to society’s norms.
You’re in a restaurant; dressed up, with friends, family, maybe a partner and halfway through your slap-up meal there’s a tap on your shoulder and “do you mind moving? it’s disgusting, no its just … you’re dribbling – it’s putting me off my food”. Updated guidance, Safeguarding Children who may have been Trafficked, was today published jointly by the Home Office and the Department for Education.
Children’s Minister, Tim Loughton, said:
Child trafficking is a horrendous crime and a very serious offence against some of the most vulnerable children. Whilst improvements have been made in recent years, we acknowledge that more can be done to protect and support vulnerable children identified as trafficked victims. (more…)
